How to verify a specialist in Mexico.

Checking a professional’s license and credentials is something you can do yourself, at the source, before you ever travel. It’s also the first thing Atlas does before we would refer anyone. Here’s how.

Start with identity

Confirm the full legal name of the specific person who would treat you — not just a clinic or a brand name. Everything else is verified against that name.

Verify the license — the cédula profesional

In Mexico, licensed professionals practice under a cédula profesional. You can look it up yourself in the federal Registro Nacional de Profesionistas (RNP), operated by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). Match the name and confirm the record is current.

A verified license confirms the person is licensed. It does not guarantee quality or outcome — it’s the floor, not the ceiling.

Check the specialty, where one applies

For a specialist procedure, ask for the cédula de especialidad or board certification (consejo) and verify it the same way. A general license and a specialty credential are not the same thing.

Ask who actually performs the procedure

The clinician you speak with is not always the one who operates. Ask who performs the procedure, and get the answer in writing.

Ask about the facility and a written plan

Where exactly will care happen, and can you get an itemized written treatment plan before anything proceeds? A provider willing to put the plan in writing is telling you something.

Be cautious with a provider who won’t name the treating clinician, won’t share a cédula number, pressures a fast decision, or leads with a discount instead of a plan.
